In this episode of the Veterinary Innovation Podcast, Shawn Wilkie and Dr. Ivan Zak are joined by Yale Zhang, founder of Seismi Inc., to explore why continuous monitoring tools have historically failed to reach mass adoption in veterinary practices — and how his company is changing that.

Yale, a serial medical device entrepreneur who has built or collaborated on numerous affordable medical devices for use in low-income countries, explains that existing high-end products are too expensive, and many affordable options are too “junky” or hard to use. Seismi’s core innovation is a non-invasive pet mat that continuously monitors heart and respiratory rates by simply being placed under a pet in a cage, primarily for post-surgical recovery.

Yale shares that building reliable hardware is five times harder than software — from engineering and manufacturing to ensuring it fits naturally into a clinic’s routine. He outlines his strategy of building affordable, high-quality products that fit easily into a clinic’s existing workflow, even offering an offline, no-subscription option to boost adoption. They also discuss the mat’s incredible accuracy in current clinical trials — within 1% compared to an EKG — and its potential future use cases for veterinarians, including remote patient monitoring of senior pets with conditions like CHF and for anxious cats at home.
